today's challenge

Today's challenge is definitely diaper changes. When we were in Moscow, it was extremely difficult to change Eli's diaper. He kicked his legs over and over, often while rolling from side to side. After we brought him home, things improved, but now it seems we are back to square one. He has started kicking again and moving a lot, but it's harder now, because his leg muscles are so strong. I try to hold his legs with one hand and diaper with the other, but he is just so strong now. We have tried saying things like "be still" or "lie still" in a soft voice, but that doesn't help at all. I stand back far enough that he doesn't kick my belly and his baby sister, but as I get bigger, that is getting more difficult! He seems to respond best when the behavior is ignored completely, but sometimes that is difficult to do. It is very frustrating! And since he is only 14 months, potty training is a long way off!

I went to the doctor this morning for the monthly checkup. I heard the baby's heartbeat, and it was very strong and regular. I am almost 23 weeks now, and other than feeling exhausted all the time, everything is going very well. Little baby girl F seems to be doing great.

Have you tried giving him something to play with while changing his diaper? Maybe it would distract him from what you are doing and he wouldn't move around so much.

We have had the similar issue with Diego. We don't use the changing table anymore because he used to move too much; now we change diapers in the twin size bed in his room. What I have been doing is to start telling him with a very soft voice that I will change his diaper, take off his shorts, open his dirty diaper, etc, etc over and over again every time so he knows what will happen each time. Sometimes it also have handy a toy that plays music, or I start singing... Those are the three variations I use (talk softly, add the toy, or add the singing). Changing diapers now has improved a lot and he seems more relax. I hope things get better.

We actually had to change one of our boys standing up. It was also a challange, but at least he couldn't kick us!

Isabel likes to turn and look over her head which makes it very hard. I can't imagine with a strong toddler. I hope he starts calming down again.

A friend showed me a trick where she lays her 2-year old daughter on the floor and puts her leg in a bent position across her belly (she is turned sideways in front of her mommy), and she changes her that way so she can't kick and squirm any more! Just another idea!

I try to sing songs with Owen and/or give him something to play with, talking very calmly to him as I change him, usually talking about what we've been doing and what we are going to do next so he'll be still! He has gotten so much better over time.
